"Keeping track of trucking
business"
Limerick, PA -- The main business of a trucking firm is to deliver the goods. But instant communications and the precise location of trucks as they travel to their destination are also important. That is one reason Venezia Transport Service Inc. of Limerick invested more than $700,000 this fall to install a company-wide OmniTRACS satellite tracking and communications system in 275 company-owned long and short-haul trucks. It brings us up to speed and allows us to catch up to technology," said Louis Capolino, Vice President of operations for Venezia. "It allows our operations department to continuously monitor the progress and positioning of our fleet." The communications system uses a computer terminal in the truck cab and a transmitting/receiving dish on the roof to broadcast e-mail messages and the truck's current position to an orbiting satellite. The satellite retransmits data to Qualcomm's San Diego, California office and telephone lines bring the email messages back to the AS/400 server computer in the operations department of Venezia. Position information and e-mail messages appear on the monitoring terminals in the operations department, Capolino said. Before the system was installed, drivers used cellular telephones and pagers to communicate with the home office. The irregular route trucking and logistics company has more than 250 corporate clients including Wetherill Associates Inc. of Royersford, Peerless Paper Inc. of Oaks, the Fleming Companies in Upper Merion and Equivalent Performance Polymers of Limerick. "It means convenience for the drivers and safety. With the smaller number of times you have to stop, there are fewer chances for something bad to happen," said Capolino. "it shows our commitment for the future of the company." The late Joseph Venezia and his son, Frank Venezia, the current president and CEO, started Venezia Transport in 1967. The Trooper-based stone hauling business began with a $1000 dump truck that hauled stone and gravel from quarries in Norristown and Plymouth Meeting, said Frank Venezia. The three owners include Venezia and his brothers, John, Vice President of Equipment and Facilities and Andrew, an executive Vice President. The trucking company hauls dry, liquid and food grade bulk products as far as eastern Mississippi, Florida, Kansas and Canada. "We go in many different directions," said Capolino. "We do run very focused lanes."
